Thinking About My Mission

Way back to when I thought that I wanted to become a teacher, I realized that what I really wanted was to help children want to learn and feel confident about who they are and what their personal abilities are in order to reach their potential. Too often children feel that they have to be just like the next person or that someone is “better” than they are. I feel that it is my job to help children realize that each child is an individual and each individual brings with them something special to contribute to society.

My mission as a teacher leader would be to help others see this end result as the focus rather than just thinking about the basic academic subjects and their content. As Wiggins and McTigue (2007) state in their article, What is the Mission of Schooling, “School is in business to promote certain worthy habits, attitudes, and conduct that stand beyond subjects: critical thinking, civic responsibility, and lifelong learning, among others.” The long term goal is to help individuals function in society. What good is the schooling if you can’t be independent and care for and support yourself in “real” life?
